Fife SchoolsPrimary Engineer® brings together teachers and engineers to engage primary and secondary pupils with engineering through projects mapped to the curriculum. Engineers provide real-world context to the activities, bringing classroom maths and science learning to life through engineering. This helps pupils and teachers to understand more about the diversity and importance of engineering in the world of today and tomorrow.

Why come on the Primary Engineer® training course?

Engineers are each linked with a school(s) and are encouraged to come to the training day to meet and get to know the teachers and project they will be supporting. As each engineer has varying amounts of time they can devote to helping schools, it is between the engineer and the school to agree what this support will look like. However, it is expected that they will make more than one visit to their linked school. The aim is for teachers to deliver the project to whole classes of pupils with the engineers acting as the expert in the room, a link to the world of engineering where classroom learning is applied in reality. The course itself equips teachers with the practical skills needed to deliver the project. They design and build exemplar models, explore the teaching resources, and learn about the challenge activities which are run at the end of the project.

What happens next?

Not all engineers who wish to be involved can attend the training day but they are still welcome to link with schools. Primary Engineer® will make the connections and provide all the introductions necessary. We also need engineers who have not supported the project in schools to act as judges at celebration events where students with the winning models from different schools compete against each other. All these types of support can count towards the UK required competencies for progression within your chosen institutions, so we will give you an evaluation form which allows you to save and record your activities for your CPD evidence.
